Loan Products Available in Washington

Installment Loans

The legal route in the District. You repay in scheduled payments rather than in one lump sum, and the lender has to hold a license from the city. Ask for the total cost of credit in dollars before you sign.

Personal Loans

For a larger or longer need, a personal loan spreads repayment further and is priced on your credit and income. Compare the total cost in dollars against an installment loan rather than comparing monthly payments alone.

What You Need to Qualify

  • Government-issued photo ID
  • Social Security number
  • Active checking account with a routing number
  • Recent pay stub or other proof of income
  • Proof of your District of Columbia address
  • Working phone number and email
  • Age 18 or older

How 1F Cash Advance Works

1F Cash Advance is a loan connector and financial marketplace, not a direct lender. We do not fund loans, approve applications or set rates. We take one request and match it to lenders licensed in District of Columbia and allowed to operate there.

  • You submit one request. A single online form, free to use, with a soft check that does not affect your credit score.
  • We route it to licensed lenders. Your details go to lenders authorized to operate in District of Columbia, not to a single desk.
  • The lender decides. If one makes an offer, that lender (not 1F Cash Advance) approves it, sets the rate and fee within state law, and funds the loan to your bank account.

Because the lender sets the terms, always read the rate and total cost in the offer before you accept.

Can You Get a Payday Loan in Washington?

No. A written loan agreement in the District may charge no more than 24% a year, and that ceiling covers the fees as well, so the two-week advance sold in other states is not offered here. Licensed installment credit is.

District income dipped in 2021 and then climbed for three straight years. A ceiling that covers fees as well as interest means the offer you compare here is the whole price, so read the annual rate on any agreement and treat anything far above it as a lender operating outside the local rules.

District of Columbia median household income and household debt per person, 2020 to 2024

Year Median income District debt per person After housing
2020 $91,957 $90,220 $5,364
2021 $91,072 $98,940 $5,313
2022 $99,897 $105,800 $5,827
2023 $104,643 $104,190 $6,104
2024 $109,289 $103,570 $6,375

District income comes from Census Bureau Small Area Income and Poverty Estimates; the debt column comes from the New York Fed Consumer Credit Panel. District income grew about nineteen percent in five years, against fifteen for debt per person. More than a third of households here spend thirty percent or more on housing.

A loan payment has to fit inside the last column, not the income beside it. The District caps what any written loan agreement may charge instead of testing your income, so the ceiling does not move with local earnings. The last column is a calculation, not a published figure: monthly county income after the standard housing share. It describes a typical household at the county median, not an approved loan amount.

District of Columbia Law at a Glance

These are the payday rules for all of District of Columbia, including Washington. In plain terms: how much you can get, what it costs, and what happens if you cannot pay on time. Full legal detail is in the D.C. Code.

Item District of Columbia position
Governing law D.C. Code 28-3301 on interest, with lenders licensed by the Department of Insurance, Securities and Banking
Rate ceiling A written agreement may contract for no more than 24% a year on the principal
What the rate covers Under the money lender chapter that rate covers all fees, expenses and services, foreclosure costs aside
Interest up front A lender may not deduct the interest from the principal when the money is handed over
Postdated checks A licensed check casher may not cash one or advance money against it
Paperwork You get a written statement of the amount, the dates, the parties and the interest, plus a receipt for every payment
Charging too much The lender forfeits all the interest and owes you a quarter of the principal, taken off what you owe
Penalties Breaking the money lender chapter carries a $300 fine, 30 to 90 days, or both, and restitution can be ordered

The District publishes no representative payday price, because the product is priced out of the market by the ceiling above rather than licensed separately. For anything you are offered here, ask for the annual rate and the total cost of credit in dollars, and check the lender against the city register before you sign.

Other Ways to Cover an Emergency in Washington

Credit union Payday Alternative Loans

Call a federal credit union and ask if they offer a Payday Alternative Loan (PAL). It is a small loan with a rate cap around 28% APR. You need to be a member. Several credit unions serve the Washington area.

Bank small-dollar programs

Ask your own bank if they make small loans for existing customers. Some call them Balance Assist or Simple Loan. They often decide from your account history, and the cost is far below payday.

Employer and paycheck advances

Some employers and apps let you take a few hundred dollars of pay you already earned. Many charge no interest. Watch for tips and instant transfer fees.

Utility and assistance programs

If the problem is an electric or heating bill, call the District of Columbia energy assistance office. Ask about bill assistance and a payment plan. That is assistance, not a loan. Call before a shutoff.

Borrow Carefully

  • Check the register before anything else. The city lists the lenders it licenses, and an offer priced far above the local ceiling is the clearest sign you are dealing with someone outside it.
  • Price the loan in dollars, not percentages. Ask for the total cost of credit and the due date in cash, and weigh it against income you are sure will arrive.
  • Protect the repayment date. Line the due date up with your pay schedule and keep the payment inside what remains after fixed bills. If you see a problem coming, talk to the lender before the date, not after it.
  • Borrow for one-time gaps only. If the shortfall repeats, a loan postpones the problem. A budget review or a nonprofit credit counselor does more than any payday loan.

To check a lender, use the District license verification service, and take complaints to the Department of Insurance, Securities and Banking or the federal CFPB.

Washington Borrowers Ask

Because the code bars it. A licensed check casher in the District may not cash a check dated ahead, or advance money against one, and that single rule removes the mechanism a payday loan runs on. Lenders offering that deal are working outside the city's rules.

The lender loses the interest entirely. Under the money lender chapter, charging more than the lawful rate forfeits all interest contracted for, and the borrower is owed a further quarter of the principal, deducted from the balance. Penalties for the lender can follow on top.

If a lender approves you and the application is finalized by 12:30 pm local time on a weekday, funds can arrive the same day. Later applications, weekends and bank holidays move funding to the next business day, and same-day deposit is not available to every customer.
